Sarah Bush Lincoln is in the planning stages for an outpatient surgery center on the Health Center’s main campus.
The SBL Board of Directors approved the action at its June meeting in an effort to accommodate the surgery schedules of the orthopedic surgeons at the SBL Bonutti Clinic and SBL ENT physicians.
The four-suite surgery center is being planned under the state’s designation as a Hospital Outpatient Departments (HOPD). The 18,000-square-foot facility will be situated just east of Prairie Pavilion 1.
BSA Architects of St. Louis is designing the center with the hopes to begin construction in March 2019. It is expected to take about a year to build.
SBL Director of Planning Erica Stollard explained that the acquisition of the Bonutti Clinic earlier this year is expected to bring several new orthopedic surgeries to SBL over the next five years, while new ENT surgical cases are expected to grow in the same time frame.
Many of the outpatient surgeries currently performed in the Health Center will be performed in the new center after it opens to accommodate new orthopedic and ENT surgeries that require hospitalizations. Those procedures that will be moved to the new center include ophthalmology, orthopedic, and ENT cases.
