Garrett Storm received the SBL quarterly Bravo! President's Award on Jan. 13 for the extraordinary care he provided to one of his patients.
His nominator wrote: "Garrett consistently goes above and beyond to care for our patients and their families. He recently was caring for a patient in the Critical Care Unit that had been very ill and had been admitted for many days. The patient was very concerned that his dogs and cat had been alone without food or water for many days. This patient did not have any family or friends that he could rely on to help with the situation. Garrett did not hesitate to help his patient by suggesting he go to his home to take care of his animals. Garrett, after working a 12-hour night shift, traveled to Oakland to care for these animals. The patient was extremely grateful for the help that Garrett offered. After his arrival to the home, Garrett also had to make the decision the animals could not be cared for in this home and needed further assistance. He ultimately got the animals the care they needed and shared this with his patient when he returned to work that evening.
Garrett went above and beyond just caring for the patient. He showed compassion and kindness to his patient without hesitation. This act of kindness meant so much to the patient because his animals were his family. CCU is grateful to have such a kind, caring, and compassionate nurse as part of our staff."
